The new air-dodging mechanics introduced in Super Smash Bros. Brawl was a major contribution to the series decline in my eyes. Juggling combos became more sparse, edge-guarding became a lot less rewarding and the already overpowered buffs to spot-dodges and rolls on the ground found its aerial counterpart. All because Nintendo didn't/doesn't want unskilled players to get combo'd too hard.

Another thing that comes to mind is how armor abilities ruined Halo's online multiplayer. Because apparently the luck factor wasn't big enough already, and new unpredictable ways to die had to be introduced.
