With the slow summer months upon us, Sony missed a good opportunity for a PS3 price drop at E3.

I get that people think "well, with so much better hardware available at $XXX, the PS3 should be $100 or less by now", but that's not how it works. It only makes sense for Sony to drop the price of the PS3 again if they can make more money from selling higher amounts at this lower price.

But I think in the last years the price to manufacture a PS3 actually went up instead of down. That's because it uses components and architectures that are not used anywhere else, like the Cell and XDR ram, and produces them in lower and lower quantities, which makes every unit more costly.

And one thing is certain - they will sooner stop production than take losses on PS3 HW again, as the console has no chance to recoup them anymore with software sales dwindling rapidly.
