I agree with the OP. Kickstarter is for when there is no other route to market. However, being announced on the stage of one of the biggest gaming expos during the biggest formats main show?

They're trying to take the risk out of gaming projects without sharing the rewards. I find it a bit of an abuse in this sort of case.

Kickstarter should be the last resort because all the publishers won't support it. Not a subsidy to increase profitability as this is being shown as.

If there was another route to the market Shenmue would've already happened.

Just because you're appearing on a stage of a big show doesn't mean that you have complete financial backing of the one who owns the stage.

Taking the risk out of game development sounds like a pretty good thing to me. And what rewards are you talking about that need to be shared?
