They do have the conviction to achieve. For me, they always have. It is just some of that was initially gone after Don Mattrick tried to destroy the Xbox Division. Microsoft needed a person to not only give them the conviction they initially lost, but the power to believe. This is where Phil enters the equation for me.

Since then, Phil has single handedly brought back Microsoft's determination, resolve, conviction and perseverance back into not just Microsoft or the Xbox Division, but the fans as well. I understand that what Microsoft and Mattrick tried to do doesn't warrant Microsoft a free pass, and it doesn't; never will for me. However, thanks in part to Phil's demeanor and great repour with gamers, we are seeing the fruition of his hard work; Microsoft has been going guns ablazing ever since then and have fought hard. Fallout 4 and Tomb Raider highlight their resilience to yield to the competition.

In the end, Gamers love it when companies fight on; bad circumstances or not. Greater products are forged as a result. That stated, Microsoft will now have conviction greater than the Ones beginnings and continue on track to combat Sony; regardless of what Sony does.

To end my statement, this isn't an attack directed at the OP at all. My statements had two goals.

1.) Answer the OP's question

2.) Share my thoughts from an entertainment standpoint

As gamers, we really should be ambivalent towards the victor. Games that deliver upon our set criteria are a big reason on why we are called gamers in my opinion. Yes, I do like Sony's press conference more overall. However, I also liked Microsoft's as well. Cuphead and ReCore are two games I cannot wait to get; the Elite Controller my personal dark highlight. So again, for me, Microsoft never lost their conviction; finding it was the question they needed to answer.
