Nintendo didn't do BC until the Wii.  

Sony did BC with the PS2, and early PS3, but cut it because it wasn't used as much, and it was something they could cut to reduce the price.  

Because they had no choice, the PS3 was being run into the ground, and they needed to get back onto their feet.
