The difference is MS stopped supporting the XB360 after 2011. Case in point. Gran Tourismo 6. NO WAY MS would have supported the old gen console with that big of an IP after the new console had launched. Had Sony shifted GT6 to PS4 it would have made the PS4 lineup look better, but they are dedicated to supporting their consoles until the end.

MS has shown, once they are ready to move on they drop the old like a rock and move on to the new. They killed the XBOX after just 4 years (really after 3, they were already shifting dev priorities).

This is giving MS more exclusives (yet they still feel they need to go out and buy them) early on while Sony is just now abandoning the PS3 (pretty much). The fact Sony had such a great start is a big deal, because their philosophy has always been to finish strong and carry momentum into the next gen.

The XB peaked with Halo 2, XB360 with Halo 3 (although I do agree Kinect gave it a second later in life peak with the 360). XB1 will peak this fall with Halo and other exclusives (they may even pull even in NA in consoles sold).
