Often, generalizations or cliches are based on some truth. Some are outright lies or false though. 

It is "mostly" lies, it is basically basing a vocal minority to the less vocal majority. But the fact is that people are more thought in bad things than good things proves that it is true. This is true for the vocal minority it came from. Some are truth but barely even if they are true, they arent that accurate.
