Nintendo planned this from 2005:

Grab the downmarket instead of aiming for the upmarket, then expand to consume your competitors' markets. To do this you need a new business strategy (drop out of the graphics race, make simpler interfaces for downmarket users, use low cost high value tools.)

This strategy should be incompatible with your competitors (Sony needs the graphics for their media center, Microsoft wants to block Sony not Nintendo) so they can't copy you.

Nintendo's success was guaranteed when they showed the Wiimote at E3 2006. Right now we're seeing the results.

There is no such thing as a console war. This is the first step to game design.
