You don't really need to craft weapons either. I did once and found better weapons within the hour. The griffin school gear lasted a bit longer yet I also found better armor laying around. (I do often sneak, grab and run, looting stuff from high lvl guarded treasure)
I only craft alchemy recipes now. I have patterns for better armor yet can't wear them until lvl 14. I'll probably find better stuff before then. My main 'problem' right now is that all the merchants are poor. I can't offload as much loot as I would like and I have over 7000 crowns with nothing to spend it on.
