They could have partnered with Team Bondi and Techland for Whore of the Orient and Dying Light respectively. Those are both decent developers who aren't big enough to publish stuff on their own. So Microsoft could have been that publisher. Or how about 4A Games (makers of Metro) they are supposed to be working on a new game and have a pretty good history, if Microsoft offer a bit of help it shouldn't be difficult to secure that as an exclusive.

As for acquisitions there have been a few that would have been good for them. Recent examples include Crytek, who had financial issues and could have been bought out fairly easily or at least some of their studios could have as Deep Silver did instead. Or how about Volition, again Deep Silver bought them but if they had wanted to there's no reason Microsoft couldn't have got their first. And what about Atlus who were recently bought by Sega? Atlus have a good output of games considering their size and would have single handedly made Xbox One relevant in Japan as well as helping elsewhere as well. And if you want some PC focused studios they could have got Relic Entertainment.

There have been plenty of opportunities either to secure exclusives or even new studios and I doubt any of the above mentioned would be any where near as expensive as a deal for Mass Effect. I'm sure there will be plenty more opportunities too, Microsoft just aren't taking them.

Yeah they seemed to have let those guys pass them by but by now they must realise that they have to either create or make a more perma deal with someone sooner or later because Sony is completely in that PS2 position where it gots deals with no extra cost, MS needs to stop settling and paying for timed deals, perma deals on that one system and maybe the PC will further strengthen them rather than letting them all go and being known for having poor relations, deals and general weakness in brand image, I trust Spencer to make good on most of his words though but I totally hold him since he's new to the decade old PC promise every MS exec makes.

Mankind, in its arrogance and self-delusion, must believe they are the mirrors to God in both their image and their power. If something shatters that mirror, then it must be totally destroyed.
