However, here in CA, no 9.8 earthquakes have been felt. 

A 9.8, would be felt far, far beyond CA (Japan's was felt in a ~2500km radius and it was a 9.0) 

The article I read recently about the inacuracies of the movie San Andreas said that the earthquake that the movie had (like a 9.5 or something like it) would only be felt like in New Mexico or something.  Nowhere near feeling it in New York or anything.
