It's possible, for sure. This could be a Smash Bros. situation where the original sets the foundation and is well-received, but the sequels go the extra mile and are critically acclaimed.

Exactly.  81 is more than enough for a new IP and its already a success for Nintendo regardless of sales because they tried something different and it worked.
