I don't know if it's been said, but Facebook trends depend solely on the user's preferences. Splatoon is probably trending for you because you like/talk about a lot of Nintendo/gaming stuff.
In other words, they don't mean much. It's user specific. Someone who doesn't care about Nintendo will never see it.
