I got completely hooked to Rogue Legacy and loved the mechanics of dying and dying to level up. The different genes each generation also mixes up the game too.
I'm not really sure how you can directly compare mechnics though, the only thing they really share in common is that they are side scrolling platformers. Rogue Legacy is a roguelike (i.e meant to be hard as nails, it's also meant to be night on impossible when you start, you need to level up). Shovel Knight is a modern attempt at a NES game and a much more straight forward 2D platform.
