As for you "fears confirmed" comment, I take it you haven't actually read many (if any) reviews, because the consensus seems to be that the base game is extremely strong, the single player is a ton of fun, the multiplayer is wonderful, but all the content is not yet there and some common features are missing. For the vast majority of websites, an 8/10 is considered "Great", and the text of the reviews back that up.

My fears were the following: 1) lack of content; 2) lack of online features/poor online management. And the 2 reviews I read confirmed these, which are pretty much the only weaknesses of the game. Splatoon is good, yes, but it could have been much better with little effort. Ofc this is the first time a Nintendo team tries something like this and they will get better, I'm sure, but as of now I believe that the score is fine considering what the game offers.
