You're right they're not linear at all. The order of the bosses you fight differs from player to player. You can also miss some bosses if you don't explore much. Same with areas you can go to an area way before your friends if you explore more than the do. There are many different paths and places to explore. I have no idea how Souls games can be considered linear. They're not open world, but the worlds are huge and you can deviate at any point.

The whole dying brings you back to the beginning thing is exaggerated honestly. It's frustrating at times I admit, but when I get frustrated I just sprint by the enemies and continue where I left off. 99% of the time it works.
