It went from "We think we need more time to get it working on the Wii U" to "We're having problems making it run properly on Wii U even after spending more time with it".

See, there's a positive way to spin it all as well. -__-

I can see why he would say the Nintendo crowd is difficult to deal with. It's always damned if they do, damned if they don't.

Doesn't "we need a little more time" imply they have a substantial amount done. Now they've revealed they're not even half way done. See the difference?

Could be anything. Could be they needed more time to make their engine work properly on the Wii U, so that the rest of the porting process goes smoothly. That didn't work out well because of the nature of the game. Hence why they're saying they'd rather port it to the NX than downgrade everything so it works on the Wii U.

You know far too well how Nintendo fans will react if the version they get is downgraded too much. I don't think I need to dig examples to show you how that happened time and again over the last few years.

So I don't think they are lying at all. I think the reasons they gave are legitimate, especially considering the nature of the game they developed. Which kept getting more and more ambitious over the course of development. The game has some problems running properly on the PS4, for Pete's sake. It shouldn't be more clear than that. The Wii U is struggling to run the game in the form they've made it / making it run on the Wii U in respectable manner is a struggle. I don't see a reason to think this is a lie.
