It did 'grown up'. Other games just pretend to be grown up. Every game before it and so far every game that came after it has second rate dialogue with characters you just don't really care about. Yes, other developers give you reason to 'feel' you care but it's pseudo care brought about by plot manipulation and cliqued scenes coupled with the appropriate music. In TLOU you care because the characters feel real.
It's actually impossible to explain properly to be honest. I have had many friends who just don't understand why one film wins oscars and another doesn't. If people can't understand the difference there then they'll never understand the difference here.
