It's not particularly a new idea or gameplay mechanic that made it great. It just executed what it tried to do, perfectly, like a culmination of several years of what some game developers tried to achieve.
It is a very grown up game and some of that may be lost on fans of more simple/historical 'gamey' games. I say that not as an insult or anything, just that it's a matter of differing tastes.
