The difference between this and your example is that Sony, MS, and Nintendo are trying to sell a product, no give themselves a non-consequential ego boost. Using a selling point in your marketing is about as 101 as it gets. When there's absolutely no reason not to do something, you do it.

Personally, when i think of 'smug', i think of Sony believing that people will be fine spending $600 on a console that was obviously not worth it (unless you wanted a blu-ray player), or MS thinking that no one would have an issue with their always-online policies. Them simply marketing an advantage is something i'd expect regardless to their current market standing. Making your product look good is kind of the point of marketing after all.

But hey, each to their own i suppose.
