I don't really think the drop in rank proves anything other than more great games are being made. Pretty much every game on Metacritic aside from Ocarina of Time and (oddly enough) Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 end up falling at some point, just because games with similar scores are placed on the site.
That being said, I'm not exactly disagreeing with everything you're saying, but this really isn't the best source of evidence to support your opinion.
