Bash is one of the more unique abilities to be found in Ori but in my experience it's a 80% travel ability, 20% combat ability.
As for Smeags' review, I agree with most of it. The game is incredible but it being locked out of temples and eventually your save file is a big misstep. Having played both Ori and Guacamelee in 2015, I have to say I enjoyed Guacamelee a little more.
