I disagree on the uninspiring and eventually lackluster combat part.
At first, to me it felt button mashey, but once you gain the bash ability with arrows, I felt it was when the game truly became special. Using the enemies projectiles to launch back, or use them to your advantage was extremely refreshing to me.
