Different strokes for different folks! I fully respect everyone's opinion about TLOU; assuming they are open minded about it. That being said:
How many opinions does it take before a statement like "game of the year" becomes fact; (although that "fact" is perceived differently by every unique individual)? The majority. And the majority is almost never wrong.
Just because you disagree with it does not make it false for the majority. The resounding majority of reviewers and players believe TLOU is a great game

What? The majority is often wrong. It often comes down to a few geniuses that change the established wold view/leading paradigm.

- Hitler was elected democratically.

- Bush was elected twice.

- Ronald Reagan is considered a great president by the majority of the US citizens even though he's one of the worst presidents to ever disgrace the USA.

- The majority of Russians support Putin.

- The majority of Russians are homophobe.

- Most people in Islamic countries consider homosexuality a sin punishable by death.

- Most people believed the sun circled around the earth before Copernicus revolutionized our world view. He met with a lot of resistance.

- Women are considered inferior according to the Shariah law which is in effect in a lot of Islamic countries (to varying degrees of course).

- There are 5 big universal religions who claim to be the only right answer (Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism and Buddhism). At most only one of them can be correct (and most likely all of them are incorrect) as these religions are incompatible with each other.

Hitler was never elected: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_presidential_election,_1932  That isn't to say he didn't become POPULAR, of course, but it's more complicated than people simply electing him to office because they thought he was the right man for the job. They never really had a choice in the matter. http://www.historytoday.com/ian-kershaw/hitler-myth

Certainly, the majority can often be wrong, but the issues you are referring to are a lot more complicated than "I think this game is overrated" and are far beyond the scope of the discussion. That's talking about deep seeded beliefs, propaganda, and manipulation of the masses. Not a bunch of consumers and professional critics falling in love with an entertainment product. Generally, when a game is lauded as GOTY, it manages to reach certain baselines in quality when it comes to polish and production values. Not quite the same thing as the majority supporting a man who killed thousands to millions.

I am hardly a Sony fanboy, I've often complained about the PS4's lack of exclusive killer-apps, but I do have to say that The Last of Us was one of the most gripping, polished, beautiful, breathtaking entertainment experiences I've ever taken part in. It was easily in my top ten favorite games of last gen, and there are NOT a lot of PS3 games on that list. Certainly no other Naughty Dog games. Frankly, I felt it was a MASSIVE step up from Uncharted 3, which I found to be fairly disappointing.

What it comes down to is simple taste: no game is every body's cup of tea. And it really is best to just leave it at that rather than talk about how majorities can be right or wrong or how a game being amazing or overrated can be some kind of quantifiable, objective fact (it isn't). I'm not JUST addressing you with this, btw.
