The first thing i thought after the E3 plans reveal was that among the NWC games Smash and Mario Kart are a sure bet.
Then it crossed my mind that this opportunity could be used to raise Splatoon to the same level. Not saying this will be 100% effective or Splatoon will sell 4M, but if the 3 "main" competitions were Smash/Kart/Splatoon and if Nintendo behave in the same (and special) way towards them, this could really do wonders to the game awareness.
Many fans/midia already talk about Splatoon as Nintendo "smash/kart" answer to shooters, this would only solidify that. The only risk i see is that this could intensify the criticisms about the lack of Voice Chat (because the teams would want to use it, and if they don't, the quality of the competition would fall).
