Funny thing is the genre peaked a while ago, way back in the original PS erta, they were putting out JRPGS like it was going out of style and it kinda did. Its not like the PS2 era was a trove for the genre either, it got a lot less JRPGS than the PS1 got. I think its just the natural order of things. No genre stays on top forever, they all rise and fall.

I concede it was a mix of the high Price of the PS3 and the microsoft exclusivity deals. The Xbox, even in the west was very connected to western games, RPG's aswell. Those deals resulted in several titles released to an audience that wasnt there, not that it didnt exist.

Some of the games released were extremely good aswell, i wouldnt say quality was an issue. Tales of Vesperia for example was an amazing game, one of the best tales and it got ignored. One can argue on how good lost odyssey, blue dragon and Star ocean 4 were, but i dont think they were bad games. The problem was it wasnt hitting the right audience. Had these games come in the last 2-3 years on the PS3 we could be lookig at a very different result.

Also, important was how the company seen has the king of RPG's faultered last gen, without Sakaguchi, without ideas and without an FF worthy of the title. Also the insistance on the sequals was more fuel to the fire.

But again, with FFXV looking to having an impact and the Xenoblade series, JRPG's are regaining the respect they once had and with the PS4 dominance the audience is there. Let the games come. We also need japan to stop making monster hunter clones and go back to JRPG's.

I would disagree IMHO Blue Dragon was way overrated. Star Ocean 4 isnt even close to the quality of the older entries, thats just me though. THe sales werent great so either the games were just ok or like you said released on the wrong system/audience.  The games that did release on PS3 in the last 2-3 years did actually do ok to good.

Oh yeah Square def screwed up hard, i think that effected the entire genre, not good when the leader falters so badly it doesnt put faint in much

I hope they do make a comeback, but with game development getting not cheaper i dont see it happening, no at PS2 levels, maybe PS2
