I see a lot of assumptions about why the Wii can not sell particularly well repeated every day; most of these assumptions are based on the demographics that are buying the Wii, and why they will abandon the Wii as soon as the PS3 or XBox 360 become cheap enough. Here is my (incomplete) list of the demographics that are buying the Wii and why this will not change durring the entire generation:
1) Families
An interesting milestone was passed in the last few years that nobody decided to take note of, home videogame systems are over 25 years old. What this means is that many/most of the gamers who owned an Atari 2600/Collecovision/Intellivision or a NES are at an age where they have children who are (approximately) the same age as when they started playing videogames. These parents want to play games with their children but the dedicated focus on very complicated (for a child under 13) and overly "Mature" games from Microsoft and Sony has alienated this demographic.
2) Social Gamers
Social gamers are a rarely talked about demographic inside of the gaming community; they tend to be far less like the stereotypical gamer, and favor simpler local multiplayer games over the complicated single player/online-multiplayer games that the "Core" gamer demographic loves. Even though the systems do support local multiplayer, there are few games which are approachable and enjoyable as local multiplayer experiences on the PS3 and XBox 360; in contrast the Wii has a massive library of these games which is growing every day.
3) The Nintendo gamers
Realistically, there are about 10 Million gamers who will buy almost any system that is made by Nintendo ...
4) Lapsed Gamers
There is a (very) large group of gamers who have given up on gaming over the years because they stopped having the time to put towards videogames, and the types of games they enjoyed either changed or stopped being made; there seems to be a revival of some of these genres on the Wii, the old games are available on the virtual console, and there are games which (may) have a similar appeal on the Wii as well as Wii Ware.
5) Blue-Ocean Gamers
A far better term than "Casual" gamers (because all demographic of gamer can be casual), the Blue-Ocean gamer is being targeted almost exclusively by Nintendo. Microsoft and Sony's attempts to lure these gamers are basically like coloring a toy gun pink to attract girls to play with this toy gun; they focus on the superficial elements of the games Nintendo produces and assumes that this will attract these gamers.
6) Core Gamers
Core gamers tend to own most systems that have enough enjoyable games to justify the purchase price of the system; as time goes on, and the Wii has more games as well as a lower price there are few core gamers who will avoid this system.
