Worst DLC ever.
My biggest gripe is the perceived value due to the exclusive features and confusing compatibility (aside from the lack of general availability of any specific Amiibo).
For example, Toad unlocks an exclusive item in Captain Toad, but he is only usable in 3 other games for minor unlocks. Kirby, on the other hand, is usable in 7 games. None of this is detailed on the packaging - but instead you are expected to navigate the compatibility chart on Nintendo's website.
If you want to unlock everything in each game, you would have to own a lot of Amiibo.
There is also no guarantee that any future games will support a particular Amiibo.
Compare this with Skylanders, where the figure released in 2011 are compatible will all 4 games (and most likely the 5th one as well), and Disney Infinity, where 3.0 will be compatible with characters from 2.0 and 1.0.
The cards will alleviate some of this, assuming Nintendo doesn't do something silly like sell them in blind packs.
