Depends on whom you ask. Basically JRPG = Console RPG, WRPG = Computer RPG (if we were to talk about the 80's and 90's terminology.) Pokemon is definitely true to the Console RPG, while something like Dark Souls - even though the developer is Japanese - is more in-line with Computer RPG's. Pokemon will probably die with the human race. I can see it being on its 30th generation in 2100. |
CRPG is technically its own genre. Divinity Original Sin and Pillars of Eternity are CRPGs. Technically, JRPGs and WRPGs are just regional terms, especially WRPG. Turn based combat and derivative forms are more common in JRPGs than WRPGs. But even then, WRPGs can be similar, as in the case of Dragon Age Origins. Etc. This was less the case early on in the 80s and 90s. Now, WRPGs would be Elder Scrolls and Dragon Age Origins, CRPGs would be Pillars of Eternity, and Pokemon etc would be JRPGs. But more and more games are bending the rules like FFXV and XCX.
