Pokemon is quite a standard JRPG with some unique features. Turn-based combat with random encounters, linear story progression, micro-management, etc, etc. A lot of people forget about it though and often say Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest are the two largest JRPG's when, in fact, Pokemon is bigger than both.

I agree with your main point though. Any JRPG that is mainstream tends to appeal more to the West than Japan, with the exception of Dragon Quest.

Yeah, I thought there were certain rules for something to be considered a jrpg, but apparently the only rule is that it has to come from Japan. My bad.

Pokémon is a beast though, it occupies the first 9 spots lol!

Depends on whom you ask. Basically JRPG = Console RPG, WRPG = Computer RPG (if we were to talk about the 80's and 90's terminology.) Pokemon is definitely true to the Console RPG, while something like Dark Souls - even though the developer is Japanese - is more in-line with Computer RPG's.

Pokemon will probably die with the human race. I can see it being on its 30th generation in 2100.
