BTW from anedoctal GAF posters the activity in Destiny is increasing more each month... more players shows on the friend list playing the game and the old ones continue non-stop too.

This is just one store in the UK. It has near 3000 online and probably countless more in it's stores. Add in GAME, all the independents, every other country in the world and I'm going to say that, yes, there are a lot of used copies of the game out there. 

I'm not saying it makes all the difference but in terms of users for Bungie's data, it will help a lot.
