Definitely tell him to talk about it with his parents. They might not be able to help much but you shouldn't keep this to yourself. For me transferring to a different class for the next grade helped. Less contact with the bullies slowly made them lose interest.

It's easy to say to ignore everything they say but that's harder than anything. It wasn't until my mid twenties that I got my self esteem back and could start tearing that wall down I had build around me. Even in my early thirties I still had that sinking feeling whenever I heard a group of teenagers laughing. It does all fade eventually.

At least I now have the satisfaction that I got very successful in work and live happily 6000 km away while most of those mouth breathers never left their home town.

School can suck, but it's just a minor phase in live. It didn't seem so at the time and I have had many thoughts about suicide as well. All I can say, things do get better, much much better later on.
