With friends if you've established comfortability with the other recipient, however, if it is with a stranger, then it's not the best move as you don't know what that other person is like.

I used to joke around like this pretty much all through high school and my friends did the same. I'm from South Asia, so you probably know some of the jokes I got. However, I did get some pretty awful remarks from people in my class who I didn't consider friend.
