Option 1) As cheap as possible and powered by external hardware - or - Option 2) Really expensive but independent

I don't agree at all. VR is way more exciting than AR ever will be. It is also nearly an impossibility that MS doesn't have a secret VR project hidden away. Anyhow, a PC running Oculus can be an order of magnitude more powerful than Hololens using onboard power. The difference is mobility. With small fanless processors of low heat hololens would be stuck with basically mobile phone or tablet power at best. Even a PS4 would embarrass it grunt wise.
