in terms of Konami, they're not as big as once were and if they invest a large amount of capital in a game like Silent Hill they better be sure that they are going to succeed with it. its not like just a gurantee obviously also your critical finger pointing at Nintendo isn't well thought out, Nintendo COULD do a Pokemon RPG series for the Wii U but the reality is it would take a lot of time and effort to make said game and also you aren't considering the effects it might have on how well Pokemon for the handhelds sell- in the end Nintendo will always prioritize Pokemon on handheld systems because it actually is proven to push hardware sales (something that can't be similarly said on Nintendo's main non handheld consoles in the past) and what examples would you pick for Sony or MS? they don't have a lot of series to pick from the reality is that software developers who have been around for quite a while (regardless of if Nintendo, Capcom, Konami, whatever) have plenty of IPs but can't take risks on them at all times it seems obvious that Konami should take advantage of the Silent Hill brand but you would be surprised how many good IPs they still have the right to that they do nothing with. obvious answer is that they lack the capital and ability to take many risks and that they either already are considering falling away from the gaming/software world OR that they are just being extremely careful, which isn't such a bad thing |
That's an awful lot of words simply to say : "It's risky to make games".
Then why be in the games business at all then? Particularly if you're going to sit on proven series. You don't necessarily have to break the bank either.
Notice I didn't say 'go make tons of games with no regard to quality or risk'. With the Amiibo crossover, and looking at SSB U/3DS sales, a crossover WiiU/3DS + Amiibo Pokemon series wouldn't hurt 3DS sales, in fact it would boost both global Amiibo sales AND WiiU sales, while keeping interest on with 3DS products as usual. The whole idea would be to have different worlds and experiences for both platforms, and have some exclusive content for each that could be bridged between using Amiibo. Obviously cutting edge graphics and FX wouldn't even be an issue, a Pokemon game on the WiiU wouldn't be a bank buster by any stretch.
As for Konami, cranking out 2.5D metroidvanias (and perhaps a new mainline 2D CV game) would be relatively cheap and easy to port to all platforms down to the 3DS. Ditto the Gradius and Contra franchises. The indie market has shown that there is still a big place for profitable games without AAA budgets. The recipes are simple, and the fans are there. It's just a matter of having the guts to do it.
Now if you argue that their severe mismanagement over the past decade has crippled their ability to do absolutely anything, then maybe you're right. Maybe everything they have left is going into the final push for MGSV. But if that's a hit, there's no excuse for them to continue their ridiculous path of self destruction.
