How so? The PS4 is still winning even though it's now the more expensive system. Even after aggressive discounting the XBO is down almost 7% YoY. The reduction to $350 gave it a solid boost for the holidays, but that completely petered out afterwards. Meanwhile, the PS4 hasn't even gotten its first price cut yet. Once it does (and if history is any indication it'll get a $100 cut this year), sales should skyrocket. The only chance the XBO has of winning this generation is via a price cut that drops it to $100 less than the PS4, and even then there's no guarantees (being $50 cheaper isn't helping). However, I don't think MS wants to risk cutting the XBO's price to $200 in the face of a $300 PS4. The losses could end up being unacceptable. Even if it did when, it'd be a Pyrrhic victory as the losses sustained from too deep of a price cut too soon could seriously damage the prospects of Xbox continuing to be a thing after this generation. I think they'd rather take the loss sales-wise in the U.S. and make some profit than win the U.S. but have the system be a net loser money-wise over the course of the generation. |
Concur with the bolded statement, Shadow. Shareholders and investors will not be pleased. Furthermore, losing more money shouldn't be the option, even if Microsoft has 'infinite' financials.
