to give an example lets talk about your body 

we say that going down to the smallest level we have definitive evidence for we have this

 the atom

 

and its said that the atom is mostly empty space with a nucleus and electrons which orbit it

so we can consider the nucleus and electrons to be mass/matter and the empty space to be void

so we end up somewhere along the spectrum between the extremes matter and void... there is a lot of empty space but its not entirely empty

and this can be extrapolated out to the universe as a whole 

there is mostly empty space ( as far as we know now ) but within it there are galaxies comprised of mass obiting some kind of center point

as above so below

This shape similarity is due to matter sharing the same laws of physics.
