IX is my least favorite of the three for PS1, but not by much. And it is a fantastic game. After replaying it again around a year ago, comparing it to todays rpg's, I could especially tell what a great game it is. It really has a distinct feel to it, as you mentioned. The battle system is good, though pretty slow compared to other FF games, so I would suggest cranking up the ATB speed to max in Options. Also, remember to steal, steal and always steal, when you fight bosses. That's basically the challenge of the game. Steal all their stuff before they kill you. They pretty much always have something useful to steal.
Oh and there's a way to get boots with Auto Haste on Disc 1. They are very very useful.
In case you consider it a sppoiler, I'll put it in spoiler tags. At the end of Disc 1 when you're in Alexandria castle, a timer will start counting down at one point. When it does, you can visit a library or something like that, where one of the bookshelfs have a boss that looks like a book. You can steal the boots from him. Or maybe he drops them, I can't recall.

The running shoes are a drop. The rare steal from the Tantarian is Demon's Mail, but it has a ridiculously low steal rate. It is definitely not worth spending the time because from my personal experience, even after an hour, the Tantarian still holds onto that piece of armor extremely tight. *shakes fist*
