They didn't have campaigns.  They had multiplayer, galactic conquest, and challenges which were basically small story missions... Which is exactly what they have described here...

I am well aware of how the original games were, but like I said including a story mode wouldn't go against what they are.  Even if its just a narrative on top of the already existing formula.
