Because the trends have been moving in favor of the PS3. The PS3 was selling slower than the 360, now it is selling faster the 360. At the moment, it is drastically outselling the 360 outside of the US on a consistent basis, as well as outselling the 360 inside of the US most of the time this year. If these trends keep up, the PS3 will be drastically outselling the 360 next year.
Microsoft told its investors that there is nothing to worry about, because the PS3 is only outselling the 360 in the US due to all of the widespread shortages, which is also why you never see a 360 in store.
