My personal experience online is that people who are competetive get frustrated and agnry when they lose. Whether the situation be sports or a game of Dota. My sister can be a massive flamer, she's incredibly competetive (plays LoL). Every MMO I've played, same thing. If you're 10 people doing a boss and someone goes afk, people get angry. Surprise surprise. Harsh words gets thrown around, for sure.
Some little idiot kid in maplestory once called everyone niggers, but apart from that, I've never ever seen anyone care about gender or race or religion, or use these as ad hominem attacks. People are *gamers*, and that is it. Gaming is incredibly inclusive in that sense. If you're good at the game, then you're the "privilged white cis male"-equivalent of the gaming world.
