Most of the contributing part is several-fold.
1. There is a heavy division in the fanbases. Moderation needs to really step forward and weed out those people who are constantly causing problems. All fanbases are at blame here
2. Simple ease of participation. It's so hard navigating the site on mobile that it's really just a drag to go on while you're doing something else. Mobile browsing needs to be literally exactly like the mobile gaf forum.
3. Moderation is too heavy against minor infractions and too light on persistent infractions. Saying something like "i knew this thread was by the OP" shouldn't be moderated. Implying someone is biased shouldn't be moderated. It should be moderated when things go too far. This is also similar to gaf. Small infractions aren't penalized. You can make all kinds of jokes and comments and not be moderated, but when you become aggressive, that's where the moderating begins.
4. Simply not enough userbase. Mostly again, this is a problem with site navigation and well, leadership. Back in the day, mods created threads about sales. I know that not everyone agreed with "thesource" myself included, but it was nice having the leaders on the site actively discussing topics that the site is all about.
5. Participation. A lot of people have walls up here. I feel like a large part of the community actively discourages participation with other groups, as I said before, I've seen this on all sides.
