I personally don't like to delete content, i know eventually I will lose the ability to download it again.

What? GT5 is the only thing I can think of where the content isn't hosted anymore (since there is 20gb or so of patchs for that game through its life) But do you mean games like MAG or MMO's which close down their servers? because there isn't much point to retain that data locally for games which are no longer available to play?

Sorry if there is something I'm missing or if I misunderstand what you mean btw, just confused.

At some point the PS3/360 won't be suported anymore. So you won't be able to redownload patches or games. When a HDD goes bad. Or you run out of room. Or swap. Unless the system is hacked, and you can get those files from fansites. That's the future proofing the modern systems don't really have anymore. Think of Wii's online. MK Wii only works because of fans. RE Outbreak online only works because of fans. It's not like Sony will allow us to backup the HDD system files without auththenication with the PSN account. And make them unprotected in the process. Then be able to find all the patch files, DLC, and organze them in a proper way, on PC, for storage.
