Intense training now is ok before the season starts, but when you play a game you lose energy. If you train intense you only get 3 points increased every day. Normally you lose around 10-20 energy points and there are games every 2 days so you only get 6 points back if you train intense.
If your energy is low the chance of getting injured increases, so generally you want to be 96+ energy before the game.
