For most people, politics is about having fun - People want their team to win debates and popularity contests. They want their opponents to be ridiculed and reduced for the sake of appearing grander in comparison. Accordingly, everything that the opposition does right is reduced, and support will go to the same team the following year regardless of what changes were made by either side.
The only individuals who regularly change their stance or have more balanced opinions rarely engage in debates, since they are aware that the opposition won't change their mind, while they don't seek approval from people who happens to support the same team. In other words, people who don't find politics fun.
