Ur just going to ignore that 4/5 of the past generations have sold roughly 65 million hardware and 300 million software. DS is a clear anomaly and shouldn't be considered standard in any regard.

If you insist on using that consistency in hardware and software sales, then you should do the same for profitability. In which case the 3DS is performing notably worse than all past handhelds and that makes the 3DS an anomaly.

Yes, they posted 3 years of losses due to the fact that they sold hardware at a loss for 3 consecutive years. 3DS was sold at a loss from August 2011-August 2012 and Wii U launched in November 2012, sold at a loss and it's currently unknown whether or not they are still selling it at a loss. I hope Nintendo has learned their lesson and will not sell hardware at a loss from this point on.
