Why video games fans care about sales more than any other entertainment business?

I guess it sort of seems like a competition where many people choose their sides and have an ever ongoing war, hoping their side beats the other sides and revel in the joy of beating them. How this all started, I`m not too sure...

I don`t necessarily care about sales in that sense, but just that I hope games sell well, or well enough (at least the ones that are good and deserve good sales.) I don`t want any games to be bombing. People worked hard on these, and jobs can be on the line. Don`t want them out of a job.
