I felt like the laid on the waifu adoration a little too thickly when I played Awalening (more so with Robin than with any other player)...
I intend to go back and play the game with fem Robin to see how that inpacts relationship development...
Character archetypes, and other issues mentioned by OP seem consostent with every other FE game I've ever played...
FE characters never had immense depth...
