Long story short, x1 pacing is really slowing down. ps4 is in a very very healthy position right now with very little competition. Outpacing ps3 by almost double and actually making a profit on hardware, which is likely increasing with every console they churn out (based on economy of scale). This is the opposite for MS. Though they are likely making a profit on each box, the costs involved are eating up their revenues.

It makes more sense for MS to change tactics than to continue drinking at a drying up well. Sony on the other hand is not in that position.

That's the gist of it.

EDIT2: I do wholeheartedly agree that the future is a livingroom without a box. However, Sony is more in the position to keep the box for now while they work on other things. And MS is more in the position to transition early.
