it is a good theory the OP has, but they won't introduce it for their next home console. for the handheld, Nintendo is already doing the incremental (mostly aesthetic, little new features, minor upgrade). but can be more of a iPhone like upgrade every 2 years for their next handheld is fine. because the games you can play 2 years ago can still be playable with the newly upgraded handheld. newly upgraded handheld would have a few exclusive like what new 3ds has. then little by little the old handheld version can't play the recent new games by a certain year or so due to the need to upgrade their handheld.
